College of Agriculture and Natural Resources -- Texas Tech University

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) was one of the original colleges when Texas Tech opened in 1925. Today, there are 6 departments which offer 14 bachelors, 20 masters and 8 doctoral degrees, and the International Textile Center.

CASNR builds leaders in and out of the classroom. The State and Federal Internship Program and many industry internships provide students with hands-on experience in legislative and commercial environments. More than twenty clubs, organizations and judging teams in CASNR offer chances to meet other students who have similar interests, compete in interscholastic contest, and gain leadership experience.

Career opportunities abound with a degree from CASNR - alumni include senators and representatives at the state and federal levels, NASA food scientists, doctors and veterinarians, sales representatives, biotechnologists, plant scientists, teachers and professors, magazine editors, lawyers, fisheries biologists, landscape architects, and bank presidents.

There are 7 departments within CASNR. These are:
  • Agricultural and Applied Economics
  • Animal and Food Sciences
  • Agricultural Education and Communications
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Plant and Soil Science
  • Natural Resources Management
  • International Textile Center

The first 6 provide all of our academic programs. The International Textile Center is a multidisciplinary research center that conducts textile research, testing, and evaluation.

Employers know that graduates of CASNR have hands-on experience - a reputation gained because students have ready access to state-of-the-art facilities. Besides several buildings on campus that house offices, classrooms, and laboratories (including several computer labs with the latest technology and software), CASNR provides other educational and research facilities including:
  • A 900-acre farm adjacent to the campus
  • A 2,300-acre ranch 55 miles south of Lubbock
  • An indoor livestock arena/meat laboratory
  • A greenhouse/experimental garden complex
  • A feedmill and beef cattle feedlot
  • Horse, swine, and sheep/goat centers
  • Collaborative design studio

As a premier program of its kind in agricultural studies, the undergraduate research program offers students a chance to gain experience in applied research as an undergraduate. It includes a two-course series that allows students to work closely with faculty mentors in organizing, planning and conducting their own research in a field of their interest. Competitive grants are available, and students participate in a poster presentation and awards program.
